How old were your kids before you let them finger paint?

I have seen a lot of babies (maybe 10 mos and up) finger painting and I wanted my daughter to make something for my mom for her b day. Well, I went to the store and bought crayola washable squeeze tubes of finger paints and when I got it home, I realized it was for ages 3 and up. Did you stick to the suggested age? If not, how old were they? I know you can make homemade edible paints out of pudding and other stuff but I wanted it to be the real deal. Thanks.
