Problems with a 1990 Mercury Topaz sputtering?

My Topaz starts up fine but after getting up to 45 mph and I need to stop at a stop sign the cars has trouble keeping the RPMs up. If I don't keep my foot on the gas the car will sputter and eventually die. Any suggestions?
